The aim was to create a unique and inviting civic square to provide a centre for community events and more casual, daily gatherings. It was to be attractive throughout the year,day and night.
The gently sloping park area creates a green space for lunch breaks and gathering and is proving very popular. White, low concrete walls and hedging casually segment the green open space and provide sitting areas.
A tensile canopy above a new stage in the civic square provides an attractive new venue for open air events.
The scheme won a Civic Trust Award in 2009.
