Pickie Park

We were appointed to masterplan the coastal sea frontage of Bangor to include for Queens Parade and Pickie Park and to prepare an overall vision for Bangor seafront. The masterplan design included the seafront and linkages to main townscape/streetscape infrastructure. We were engaged as Lead Landscape Architects to deliver Phase 1 of the masterplan, Pickie Park to completion on site. We carried out a site appraisal and condition assessment and prepared 3D sketch design information for client purposes, statutory and stakeholder consultation and presentation to Council. We refined the brief for client sign off and prepared detail design information for submission to Planning. Given the proximity of the site to the coastal seafront we assessed all localised environmental and ecological requirements and specified materials and planting suitable for maritime conditions. We note within the Tender information that there is potential scope for works at Victoria Park. Victoria Park is similar in proximity and exposure to coastal challenges and would need addressed in same context. We obtained samples and similar examples of previous projects for consideration and sign off by the client and further refinement of the brief.

We provided input into the development of interpretive signage and lighting as this was considered integral with the Landscape Design. We submitted the project to Planning and met with Statutory Consultees to present the concept. The park included new play facilities such as children’s playground, splash pads, café refurbishment, public conveniences, crazy golf and refurbishment of the swan pool. Historic information of the original park was used as baseline material to inform the upgrade. The park was re-connected to the harbour by removing the overgrown walling. The park included for refurbishment of the lagoon area, a looped themed perimeter walk, learning spaces for outdoor teaching, upgrade of the Swan Pedolo’s and splash pads

The approximate budget for the Queens parade masterplan is estimated at circa £10m with the 1st phase Pickie Park completed in May 2012 on budget for opening at Easter at a budget of £2.6m

We set up and established procedures between us and the client relating to requests from the contractor for variations to the contract to ensure the project was kept within budget and on programme.
